Uncommon Gardens by Beth Fuller
First published in the Escapees Magazine, March/April 2017 issue
Common garden areas within Evergreen Coho SKP Park in Chimacum, Washington afford "adopter-caretakers" uncommon opportunities! Park volunteers combine nature with hobbies and enjoyable outdoor activity. Time spent on common areas (besides being relaxing) enhances the park’s atmosphere and physical beauty. Visitors and residents all praise the Welcome Park and Orca Waterfall, Rhody Park (central lawn), and a variety of strip gardens brimming with rhododendrons, roses, herbs, ornamental grasses, daisies, lilies, iris, annuals, shrubs, and fruit trees.
Common area volunteers even created a huge two-dimensional COHO salmon rockscape, inspired by the carved salmon atop the Park’s signature Totem Pole, the rock design mimics unique native symbols and vivd colors. The 90-foot fish anchors a nautical-themed block which includes a wooden sailboat with fishing line and hook, tree-trunk sculpted bears, and a beach of shells, fish net, and driftwood collected from the shores of nearby Puget Sound.
Come, relax, and enjoy beautiful Evergreen COHO SKP park and its Olympic Peninsula neighborhood.
