A short history of our park

The history of Evergreen Coho SKP Park is rich with grand expectations, determined commitment, and dreams fulfilled. In 1985 during the March Escapade (a gathering of members of the national Escapee organization), the newly formed Evergreen Chapter of the Escapees met and decided to explore the possibility of forming a 120-space RV Co-Op somewhere in the Pacific Northwest. Chapter President, Jim Bennett, appointed Chuck and Mary Courtney to pursue this matter and report at the Chapter Rally in Vader, WA. in June. A request for a $20.00 non-refundable registration fee from those interested in forming a co-op was posted in an Escapees newsletter. At the June rally a feasibility report was presented by Courtney and by the end of the rally there were 66 members signed up with an interest.
By January of the next year there were 105 names signed up on the waiting list and by June it had risen to 177. The land they hoped to purchase needed to be approximately 20 acres for a minimum of 120 lots. Among the properties considered—and the one chosen—was acreage on Anderson Lake Road, in Chimacum Washington, where Evergreen Coho SKP Park stands today.
The next two years were a flurry of permits and contracts, decisions and changes. By mid-August, 1989, all electrical, water, and sewer lines were finished to each of 177 sites and contractors were grading for the clubhouse site. A building permit for the construction of a 16’ x 40’ Welcome Center was issued August 30 and the volunteers started to work on it immediately.
On October 9, 1989, on a lovely sunny fall day, a ground-breaking ceremony for the clubhouse was held. And by December, the Corporate Office was moved from the original temporary shack to the Welcome Center and the first clubhouse walls were raised.
That winter a group of eleven members agreed to stay to work while living in their RV’s on the property. However, it was dry camping only since none of the electrical, water or septic systems were actually hooked up yet. The “Lonesome Eleven,” as they came to be known, worked throughout that winter to create the strong and enduring basis of the Evergreen Coho SKP Park.
Since its founding, Evergreen Coho SKP Park has served as a resting place for travelers, a home base for visitors from around the world, and a home to numerous SKP RVers. Our Pacific Northwest offers a temperate climate and the Olympic Peninsula is a treasure chest of great natural and man-made wonders.
